Town of Sundre Fire Ban in Effect as of May 15, 2026
Wildfire RWF036 UPDATE 4: May 18, 2026 - 3:30 PM AS PROVIDED BY MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY
Mountain View County Continues Monitoring Wildfire Situation Near Bearberry (Northwest of Sundre) – Now Classified as “Being Held” According to Alberta Wildfire, RWF036 is now classified as being held, meaning the wildfire is not expected to grow beyond its current boundaries given existing weather conditions and available resources. Following updated mapping, the wildfire is now estimated at approximately 997 hectares in size.
Firefighters, heavy equipment operators, and night-vision equipped helicopters continue suppression efforts, including extinguishing hotspots along the north perimeter and within the interior of the fire area. Smoke may remain visible from nearby communities; however, Alberta Forestry has advised there is currently no risk to nearby communities, including those within Mountain View County. Mountain View County continues to actively monitor the situation and remains in communication with Alberta Forestry, Clearwater County, emergency management partners, and local response agencies.
Residents may continue to notice increased activity at the Sundre Airport and surrounding area as Alberta Forestry uses the airport as a staging and operational base for wildfire suppression efforts. Increased helicopter, aircraft, emergency personnel, and support activity may continue while crews work toward fully extinguishing the wildfire.
Due to the wildfire’s proximity to Highway 40 (Forestry Trunk Road), portions of the highway remain closed. Residents and visitors are reminded to avoid the area, obey all road closures, and give aircraft and emergency crews space to operate safely, particularly near lakes and rivers where aircraft may be scooping water.
