Q. Why two different bins?

A. Landfill waste is one of the most expensive ways of dealing with refuse, both in terms of dollars and in terms of the environment. By using a second container and alternating collection weeks, the Town is able to save more than 30% of its waste disposal costs.

In addition to saving on the disposal costs, the Town shares in the revenues from selling the finished compost, which can be used to lower waste management costs in the future.

Q. What is community composting?

A. Community composting is a system of waste management that diverts organic materials from the landfill. Similar to backyard composting, community composting turns organic materials, such as food, waste, leaves, and grass clippings, into valuable compost. The difference is scale: Community composting uses industrial-scale facilities and techniques. The community composting program can also accept materials — such as meat, fish, and dairy products — that are not acceptable for backyard composting.

The Mountain View Solid Waste Commission, together with the Town of Sundre, is offering this service to help the environment and to help local taxpayers.

Q. Can I dispose of veggies, fruits, and peels into the green bin?

A. Yes. In addition to those items, the following are accepted in the green bin:

  • pasta
  • rice
  • bread
  • grass clippings
  • plant waste
  • coffee grounds/filters
  • egg shells
  • meat
  • fish
  • solid fats
  • cat litter

Q. Do the rollout carts have to remain or be stored at the front of our property?

A. No, the rollout carts only have to go to the front curb on Thursdays. You may store the carts wherever you find it most convenient on your property.

Q. Can we use plastic bags in the organic (green) rollout cart?

A. No, plastic bags do not decompose so they cannot be used.

(However, we please request that you do use plastic bags in the black rollout cart to keep the garbage from blowing around while being emptied into the garbage truck.)

Q. Where do we place the rollout carts on Thursdays?

A. The rollout carts are to be placed on the street right next to the sidewalk or curb. The only exception is Main Ave East and West — they will have to be put on the sidewalk.

Q. Does the black rollout cart increase the amount of household waste allowed?

A. No. The carts will hold approximately 4 units (ie. 26” x 32” bags) of waste, that is two units per week and on a bi-weekly pick-up equates to 4 units.

Q. Can we place bags of waste on top or beside the rollout cart?

A. No. If waste is placed on top or beside the cart, it will not be picked up.

Q. If the rollout cart is so full the lid does not close, will it be emptied?

A. No. The lid must be easily closed to have the cart picked up. The containers, if not overfilled, will keep the contents inside and keep animals out.

Q. Can we still get Blue Boxes and green compost bins?

A. Yes. Blue Boxes and green compost bins can both be purchased from the Town of Sundre Office at a cost of $6.92 + GST each. Call (403) 638-3551.

If you did not receive information about the new waste collection system with your carts, please contact the town office for instructions and schedules.

Concerns with the pick-up of carts may be directed to the Mountain View Regional Waste Authority at (403) 556-8120, as well as the Town Office at (403) 638-3551.
